A little about myopia first:
What is myopia?
It is nearsightedness
It is a type of several existing refractive errors
(= when the eye doesn’t focus light correctly)
How to suspect that my child has myopia?
-Difficult to see distant objects
-Sitting closer to TV
-Squinting or partially closing the eyelids
What is its cause?
This happens because the shape of the eye is slightly abnormal.
Either the eyeball is a little too long or the cornea (the transparent layer in front of the pupils) is too rounded or both.
Unfortunately, it can get worse until the eye has stopped growing.
How to prevent?
-Getting enough time outside
-In rainy days: sing, dance, play an instrument, help to cook, build a fort
-Take breaks from near-work
-Limiting time spent in front of screens (not so easy..I agree)
-Balanced diet (lower in high glycemic load carbohydrates)
How to treat?
-Glasses
-Contact lenses (not recommended before middle school)
-Refractive surgery by laser (not before 18 years of age)
What is myopia control glasses? Does my child need them?
The classic myopia glasses cause a sharp image to form inside of the eye.
The myopia control glasses contain in addition mini lenses which are distributed across the lens surface, helping to send a specific type of signal to the myopic eye to slow down its growth.
So control glasses help slow down progressive myopia.
Now, whether your child need them or not
will depend on the severity and progression of his myopia.
It is recommended to wear the control glasses for at least 12 hours a day, everyday, in order to obtain optimal results.
You can speak to your ophthalmologist to discover if your child will benefit by wearing them.
Remember that those glasses do not cure myopia, but can only slow down its progression.
And PREVENTION is always better than CURE.
